Q&A: Will I lose these twins also?

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

I have a very strange case. I am 35 years old and pregnant with twins. I am currently 8 wks 2 days as of 9-27-01. This is my second twin pregnancy. My first twin pregnancy ended with a missed miscarriage at around 12-14 weeks. I had approximately 10 ultrasounds with that pregnancy and everything looked fine early on. I did however have spotting until one of the heartbeats stopped. I went on and had a very healthy baby boy. This pregnancy started very troublesome. At 4-5 weeks I started spotting and cramping. I was diagnosed with an eptopic pregnancy. I had a laproscopy and they found nothing. I was sent home and told that I had a problem pregnancy and would have a miscarriage. One week later I was sent for an ultrasound and only one heartbeat was heard. Two weeks after surgery two sacs were found and only one heartbeat. Three weeks after surgery they found two sacs and two heartbeats. The doctors were very surprised. Is it possible that I may lose this twin pregnancy also? If so, how likely is it that I could get pregnant again (without any fertility medication) with another set a twins. What are my chances of having this set. I realize you cannot see into the future, but any advice, glimmer of hope, or anything to ease my mind would be helpful.

At your age (sorry about the way I say that!), twins are more likely. Babies don't die and come back to life, so the loss of the second heartbeat before was probably just not seeing it.

At this point, I would say that your chances of losing any part of your pregnancy are more likely due to the general statistics that 20% of all diagnosed pregnancies miscarry, and not due to your particular history.
