Even before your new baby arrives, his or her nursery will become one of the most important rooms in your home. Within its walls, an infant is nurtured, parents provide love and care, and families gather to enjoy their little ones. The design elements and furnishings that create this special space should be planned with much thought and love.
Start with the Basics
When designing your nursery, a good starting point is to determine which pieces of furniture are necessary for you and your baby. In addition to your crib, a changing chest and a dresser or armoire for storage are must-haves. A glider or rocker is also essential; you'll need a comfortable chair for late-night feedings and rocking your baby to sleep. You may find a few items already in your home that will work well in your new nursery.
Make a list of existing furniture and then map out the nursery. This process will allow you an opportunity to evaluate space before purchasing furniture. Be creative when considering existing furnishings. A guestroom dresser or an antique desk can easily be repurposed as a changing table. Be sure, however, that when you purchase or borrow a new crib that it meets all current safety standards.
Establish a Design
After you consider the nursery's space and determine which furnishings you will need, it's time to begin your design strategy. Take a look at your own childhood memories for inspiration when designing your baby's nursery. Did you dream of far away places, magical kingdoms with castles, princes and princesses? Do you have warm memories of a cozy room filled with heirloom furnishings? By sharing your special memories with your child, you can create a nursery that imparts the spirit of family and creates a feeling of tradition and wonder.
Bringing in the New
When it's time to begin shopping for nursery furniture, many new parents start with a crib. Much like the nursery's design, selecting a crib is a very personal experience.
