Q&A: How much weight should I gain during pregnancy?

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

How much weight should I gain in my first trimester and so forth? I am seven weeks and a few days pregnant. Although this is my third child, I have had a huge space between my first two children, now 14 and nine years old, and this pregnancy, so it has been a long time.

Thanks.

Here are some basic baby fat facts: The average American woman gains between 25 and 35 pounds during pregnancy, but only seven and a half pounds are attributed to the baby!

Wondering where the rest of that weight goes?

Here's how it measures up:

  • Fetus 7.5 lbs.
  • Fat, protein and other nutrients 7 lbs.
  • Increased blood 4 lbs.
  • Increased fluid 4 lbs.
  • Uterus 2 lbs.
  • Amniotic fluid 2 lbs.
  • Breast growth 2 lbs.
  • Placenta 1.5 lbs.
  • Total 30 lbs.
