Q&A: What does colostrum normally look like?

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

I am 33 weeks pregnant and about a week ago colostrum began leaking from my breasts. It's no big deal, just a little inconvenient, but my concern is that I thought it was supposed to be clear, yellowish liquid. It is, but there are small white chunks in it! Is this normal?

It's very common for you to begin leaking colostrum in the later stages of your pregnancy. The liquid appearance you describe is normal.

The only cause for concern would be if the fluid coming out of your nipples had blood in it or was brown (meaning old blood was in it).
