Q&A: Is it normal to have period-like cramping during pregnancy?
I am 12 weeks pregnant. Since week five, I have had period-like cramping; it was pretty bad between eight and nine weeks. My doctor gave me two transvaginal ultrasounds to make sure everything was OK. The pregnancy is not ectopic and there is no bleeding, but I was just wondering if this is normal because I still sometimes get this cramping in my lower stomach and on either my left or right side.
Sounds like “growing pains” to me, as the pregnancy distends your uterus, which is covered with a lining called peritoneum that is sensitive to stretching. It’s normal. It may get worse until about 12 weeks, at which time your uterus is too big to fit in the pelvis, so it starts protruding into your abdomen, where there’s lots of room for expansion. At that point, these cramps should resolve.
