Q&A: Is it normal to have a hard time breathing at 23 weeks?

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

I am now 23 weeks pregnant and lately I feel as if I cannot breathe. It feels as if something is pushing down on my lungs. Is this normal and what can I do to get rid of this feeling? I am concerned that this might affect my baby.

Actually, someone is pushing UP on your lungs. It's the increased size of your uterus not allowing your diaphragm to depress all of the way, filling your lungs less. Sleeping in a semi-upright position can help at night. If it happens while at rest and standing, tell your doctor as you might have some borderline cardiac or pulmonary condition that has been made symptomatic with the challenging physiology of pregnancy.
