Q&A: Should I worry about my light bleeding during the first trimester?

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

I've been pregnant since about the 7th of May, I really should have started my period around May 25th or so. I started to show faint signs of blood when I went to the bathroom on Thursday June 5. Now only if I've been on my feet too much or have a bowel movement do I show any blood...I do have to wait on labs from blood being drawn on the 5th. Do I have anything to worry about right now?

Any bleeding in the first trimester should be evaluated, and blood work is the best way to do it this early on. Ultrasound becomes valuable after about 6-7 weeks, which you should be past by the time you've read this.

Thankfully, there are many innocent reasons to have spotting and bleeding, but the blood tests--serial HCGs--are the best way to get a quick answer.
