Q&A: I have numbness in my vagina. Is this normal?
I am almost 11 weeks pregnant and I feel pretty good. I have had no cramps or spotting or morning sickness. I've had a check-up and ultrasound already and everything looks good. However, since yesterday, I have this weird, tingly-numb feeling on the left side of my vaginal canal. Is this normal? Or is it something I need to be concerned about? Thanks.
Let’s face it, cramming two people into the space of one can get a little crowded and a little weird. This may be anything from injury of nerves in the round ligament to just swelling in the vaginal sidewalls, blunting nerve response. These are guesses, mind you, and even as terrible as “injury to nerves of the round ligament” sounds, it’s harmless and spontaneously reversable. (The round ligament on each side of the uterus are wimpy supports for the postioning of the uterus, but they run from the sides of the womb through each inguinal canal to insert into the side walls of the vagina and even inner thighs. They are famous for causing “round ligament” pain in latter 2nd trimester. Hmmm…numb may be good.)
Of course, any paresthesias (weird nerve sensations) should be reported to your doctor, just to document it so that further occurrences may be heeded as warnings for things like spinal disc herniation and things like that (very, very unlikely).
