Q&A: Is it normal for me to cramp after having an orgasm?

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

I am 7 weeks pregnant. A week and a half ago, I started experiencing abdominal cramping after achieving orgasm. Is this normal so early in pregnancy, or could I be further along then I think? Why does this happen?

Orgasms release oxytocin, which stimulates uterine contractions. It is felt that this activity is harmless, although it may distract you from the orgasmic experience (some say even enhance it). It should have no impact on your pregnancy unless your doctor advises you to refrain from sex due to complications of pregnancy.
