Sex and Pregnancy: The Naked Truth Revealed
Round, Ripe, and Ready?
By the time the second trimester rolls around, miscarriage fears generally ease, that horrible seasick feeling usually subsides, and if a gal actually feels like getting feisty, this is typically the time when she’ll do it. Vasquez remembers, “I had these really intense sexy dreams during my second trimester and loved having cleavage for the first time in my life, so things picked up a bit then.” Troy says that she and husband Craig, “had some fun during the second trimester.” Larger breasts and hips and a soft rounded belly help some women feel fertile and sexy during this time, plus pregnancy causes extra blood flow to the labia, leading to easier arousal and more pleasurable orgasms for a few lucky ladies.
If a couple is actually enjoying each other’s company now, that growing bump can get tricky to work around. Vasquez’s husband Jimmy admits, “It was a little scary . . . I wasn’t sure where it was OK to touch. But since it wasn’t happening all that much at the time, I was happy to get whatever sex came my way.” Dr. Spetalnick says, “Positions will need to be adjusted as mom’s tummy gets bigger and generally the woman on top works best.” But he asserts no position is “safer” than another. “Sex is safe, period,” he says.
Not everyone enjoys a second trimester honeymoon though. Katie Nuroft, mother of two young boys, recalls, “I felt fat and unattractive, so I was never in the mood!” And Dr. Spetalnick says, “I haven’t heard about this [sudden shift in libido] from my patients (or my wife). I suspect this is an old wives’ or husbands’ tale.”
