Q&A: Could my tipped uterus be causing me tail bone pain?

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

Every few days I seem to have a lot of stretching feelings in my back on both sides of the bottom of my tail bone. I also have this stretching feeling on both sides of pubic bone in the front. Could this be caused by my tipped uterus? I'm 10 weeks pregnant and it has been occuring since about 5 weeks. Sometimes it is so painful that I need to take Tylenol for pain relief. I had an ultrasound at just over 8 weeks and everything looked normal. Can you recommend any books that would explain more symptoms that might occur with a tipped uterus?

What you're experiencing are tuggings along your uterosacral and round ligaments--ligaments that usually hold the normally sized uterus in place in the pelvis. As the uterus enlarges, these get stretched or pulled, radiating normal AND HARMLESS pain to the areas they insert on, namely the tailbone and inguinal areas. The pubic bone pain is a result of the joint there loosening up due to two hormones in pregnancy, progesterone and relaxin. This is normal.

Your uterus won't be a tilted uterus much longer, as after 12 weeks it's no longer small enough to fit in the pelvis--tilted or otherwise--and lifts into the abdomen.
