Back-to-School Food Fun
Try these recipes with the kids—each one is a reminder that school is on its way!
Abacus Waffles: Wash and place some blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries in a bowl. Toast a frozen waffle and place it on a plate. Look at the rows of holes (compartments) in the waffle. Place one berry in the first square in the first row. Place two berries in the first two squares of the second row. Continue adding berries like this until all the rows are full. Create a pattern by using different types of berries or alternating the berries and colors. Pour syrup on the waffles and enjoy this fun counting breakfast or snack.
A-B-C Cheese Sandwiches: Select a favorite letter for your sandwich. Place one slice of white American cheese on a piece of bread. Take a slice of yellow American cheese and carefully cut out a "letter." Place this letter onto the first slice of cheese. Eat this as is, or place these letter sandwiches on a cookie sheet and broil them in the oven for a melted delight. Watch carefully as it only takes a short time for the cheese to melt.
Sandwich Puzzles: Make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Cut the sandwich into zig-zag pieces to form a puzzle. Serve the sandwich pieces on a plate and have the kids put the puzzle together before eating this lunch or snack. Try these other great sandwich fillings, too: peanut butter and banana, peanut butter and raisins, or peanut butter and apple butter.
Traffic Lights: Separate graham crackers into rectangular sections. Frost the graham crackers with vanilla frosting. Place M&M candies on the cookies in the order of a traffic light (red, yellow, green). As the kids make and eat these treats, talk about the red, yellow, and green lights on a traffic signal. What do they mean? Why is it important to obey traffic light rules?
No matter what your child's age, going back to school is a milestone you and your child can enjoy together while making these fun projects.
