Giving My Nursing Gear a Second Life
I'm not done breastfeeding, but my daughter found a creative way to use some of my gear.
I’m not done breastfeeding yet, but my oldest child found new uses for some of my unused nursing gear.
A few months ago, my daughter discovered a box full of unused nursing pads. Beyond the first few weeks of breastfeeding, I didn’t have a need for them. I wasn’t sure what to do with them though. Throwing away perfectly good nursing pads seemed wasteful, but offering them to another mom felt awkward. So, I consolidated the remnants of the brands I tried, stuffed them into a box, stuck it on a shelf in the nursery and promptly forgot about them.
Ever since my daughter began engaging in pretend play with her “friends” (aka her Yo Gabba Gabba plush dolls), she has found ways to turn ordinary household items into tools for play—some more surprising than others. The other day, she pulled out a box while I was changing her brother’s diaper. I heard her counting, so I looked down to see what she was playing with.
It took me a moment to realize the pile of white circles were breast pads.
“Rissa, put those back!”
“But I need them, Mommy. For my friends!” she smiled up at me.
I wanted to tell her they weren’t toys. They weren’t something to be played with, but then I thought, “What’s the harm?” No one else was using them. They aren’t dangerous for her or anything. And, I didn’t really know why it bothered me. I suppose my mind automatically went to thoughts of, “Oh no, she’ll make a mess!” or something.
“What do you need them for?”
“These are pillows. Open these for me, please?” She handed me a couple that were individually wrapped.
Back in the living room, she unpacked the box once again. This time it was her make shift doctor’s clinic on top of their play kitchen and the neighboring arm chair. I watched with amusement as my unused nursing pads became pillows and blankets for all of her patients. I shouldn’t have been surprised. Previously, I’ve found her using pads and panty liners used as beds and bandages. Another time she used the tubing from my breastpump as a lasso to rescue her friends and as a garden hose to water pretend flowers.
Wonder what she’ll think of next?
