How to Make a Hair Bow
You can fork out the money for a boutique-style bow—or you can make one on your own, for just a few dollars, in about 10 minutes. Pick up some pretty ribbon, learn the basic steps, and you're good to bow!
1) 18 inches of 1.5 inch grosgrain ribbon to make a 3 1/5 inch bow
2) 5 inches of ½-inch wide coordinating grosgrain ribbon
3) 6 inches of fine gauge floral wire
4) A hair clip
5) Glue gun
Step 1: First You Fold
Fold the 24 inch piece of ribbon in half and crease, pressing down hard with your thumb so you create a crease. Easy so far, right?
Step 2: Get Loopy
Open the ribbon and lay it out flat. Bring one edge of the ribbon to the center of the ribbon, as shown, and lay it on top of the crease to form a loop.
Step 3: It Figures
Go ahead and bring the other edge of the ribbon to the center, creating a figure eight. Make sure the ends of ribbon overlap about an inch.
Step 4: Bring It In
Grab the edge of one loop and bring it to the center of the ribbon, as shown. From this point on it works best to hold the ribbon in your hands.
Step 5: The Other Side
Bring the loop on the other side to the center as well. Then adjust the loops so they are even.
Step 6: Hold Tight
Pinch the center together so that you create an accordion fold in the center. Keeping the fold tight will create a nicely shaped bow (you can see it morphing into a bow, right)? If necessary, adjust the loops to make them even.
Step 7: Down to the Wire
Tightly wrap a piece of floral wire around the center, causing the loops to splay out. Twist wire securely in the back and trim edges.
Step 8: Now, The Little Ribbon
Cut a five-inch piece of the narrow ribbon to make a knot for the center of the bow (we’re headed toward the home stretch)!
Step 9: Tie the Knot
Make a knot in the center of the ribbon—you know, just like you learned in Girl Scouts.
Step 10: Wrap It Up
Place the bow on top of the ribbon, smack on the knot. Tightly wrap the ends of the ribbon around, folding one edge under the under.
Step 11: Now, Glue
Place a drop of hot glue on top of the folded end of the ribbon. Do not glue on the underside of the ribbon—you want to leave a space for the clip to slip through.
Step 12: Make Ends Meet
Pulling ribbon taut, fold down the end of the other side (trim if too long) and stick it onto the hot glue.
Step 13: Slip In the Clip
Slide the hair clip through the back of the ribbon.
Step 15: So Sweet!
And there you have your bow—and won’t your cutie pie look lovely in it?
Yes, she will.
