Do imported car seats sold in the US meet federal safety standards?
They do. “Any car seat that’s available for purchase in the US must meet US federal motor vehicle safety standards, regardless of where it was made,” says Sandy Sinclair, a highway safety specialist with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in Washington, DC.
If you order a car seat from a Canadian or other foreign website and have it shipped to the US, be sure to ask the retailer if the seat meets US federal safety standards, advises Sinclair. “If it doesn’t, don’t buy it.”
