Onesies Go High Tech
While some high tech baby gadgets give me pause (bouncy seat with iPad, anyone?), others are just downright ingenious. Check out details on the Mimo, the new onesie with an attached baby monitor
While I’m firmly opposed to some of the new high tech gadgets for babies (have you seen the new bouncy seat with an attachment for your iPad?), I’m all for those which can keep your baby safe and make your life easier at the same time.
Rest Devices, Inc. has invented a baby onesie called the Mimo that proposes to aid in baby’s well-being, sleep and development. The onesie has built-in sensors that record a baby’s position in bed, body temperature, motion, and respiration as he or she sleeps. Kind of brilliant, no? The sensors transmit data wirelessly via Bluetooth to a nearby base station and then onto a parent’s (or caretaker’s) smartphone.
Parents then have the ability to examine reports and receive custom alerts for anything that may give them cause to check the baby. Because the Mimo touches a baby’s torso, it can monitor breathing and may help prevent fatalities such as sudden infant death syndrome and suffocation by alerting parents if breathing has stopped for an abnormally long time.
The Mimo will be in stores in January (at an as-yet-undisclosed U.S. retail chain), so the jury is still out on how successful the line will be. The kit includes three machine-washable onesies and a base station that transmits data to a smartphone. Now, with a suggested retail price of $199, the Mimo isn’t cheap. Then again, peace of mind is priceless… especially to new parents.
