My Favorite Products for Curly, Mixed Hair Care
Tending to curly or mixed hair? These high quality products work wonders for the driest tresses - keeping moisture a priority - while being sensitive enough for our little one's growing mane.
Healthy Curls, Healthy Identity
Growing up with curly or mixed hair is a beautiful thing! And while my daughter’s tresses take a lot of work, keeping her mixed hair healthy is a top parenting value. For better or worse, hair is a big deal for many women and those of us with curly hair are no different. Healthy curls can lend to a healthy identity and love for natural hair. These products are ones we’ve used and loved in our journey for healthy curly, mixed hair care.
For Baby's Curly Hair
Formulated with certified organic ingredients, Curls’ It’s A Curl baby line is the best baby hair care line I found. The line offers everything from shampoos, conditions and leave-in cream, although your baby’s curly hair might not need it all. It’s A Curl is mild, yet nourishing for the curliest of babies. Prices range. It’s A Curl is found online and in select retailers.
Shampooing Beautiful Curls
Loaded with shea butter, Beautiful Curls offers a varied line of products for hair types from kinky to curly and everything in between, including babies and up. I love the product shown, the Curl Nourishing Shampoo, for its gentle cleansing. The shea butter kept our tresses hydrated, yet cleansed, leaving our curly mixed hair healthy and shiny. The company is also committed to fair trade and empowerment, making your insides feel pretty too. Beautiful Curls is found online and at local Whole Foods.
Free of Formaldehyde and Sulfates
It’s true: curly, mixed hair needs a lot of product to maintain optimal levels moisture. But keeping the formaldehyde and damaging sulfates out of your baby’s mane with high quality, natural products should be a top priority too! Alba Botanica is a brand we often entrust with our little one’s curly hair needs. We especially love their shampoos and comb-through conditioners rich with coconut milk.
Favorite Co-Wash Cleanser
Curly girls shouldn’t shampoo every day, so for those in-between washes, I love using SheaMoisture’s Coconut & Hibiscus Co-Wash Conditioning Cleanser. Always free of sulfates, this cleanser is gentle and nourishing for the mid-week wash. Be sure to still follow up with conditioning products though! Found at Target ($11.99) and other retailers.
All Natural Deep Conditioner
This all natural deep conditioner from Eden BodyWorks is the first I used on my daughter’s curly, mixed hair when she was about two years old. Her curly hair never loved me so much! The JojOba Monoi Deep Conditioner is fortified to balance moisture levels and doesn’t require much – one jar lasted us several months. This products is very hard to comb through, however. Found online for $9.99 or in select retailers.
Mixed Hair Detangling Deep Conditioner
Much easier to comb through, Mixed Chick’s deep conditioner is a favorite among curly girls for its detangling ease and nourishing properties. It is light weight and won’t hold your curl down, yet giving mixed hair shine and softness. Directions say to wash this conditioner out, but often times I don’t, leaving beautiful, soft curls the next morning. Product ranges in price and be found online and select retailers.
Leave In Conditioner We Love
Although I “leave in” all types conditioners in my baby’s curly hair (not all at once, though!), this is perhaps my favorite of all Leave-In Conditioners. Mixed Chicks really hit this one out of the park with its light weight formula that provides the perfect amount of hold, giving mixed hair care a simple and effective tool for controlled, tight curls. Lose the crunchy, gel look and let your little one’s curls bounce without the frizz. Not cheap by any standards, I’ve dropped close to $20 on a bottle before. Product is found online and in select retailers, including various Target stores.
Refresh Your 2nd Day Curls
Our most purchased, and thus most used, styling product is Curls’ Curl Moisturizer/2nd Day Curl Refresher. I love this stuff! I avoid gels and dehydrating products on my little ones’ mixed hair, so to add moisture back several days after a deep condition, I spray with water and work this product in liberally. It’s light weight and non-greasy, leaving Alina’s hair with lots of shine and bounce. Prices vary according to retailer.
For That Extra Unruly Curl
As your little one’s mixed hair continue to grow, you’ll likely find the occasional strand of unruly curl. There’s no need for mounds of gel, though. Curls’ Passion Fruit Curl Control Paste helps to soften frizz and control those unruly curls. Also known as edges, this product is great for keeping the hairline free of frizz when styling in pony tails, etc. Most of all, I love that this product has no sulfates, silicone, parabens or mineral oils. Since our focus is on highly moisturized curly hair, this product is rarely used but highly appreciated when necessary in our home. We’ve bought only one jar, from our local Target, for $8.99. Prices and location may vary, but product can also be found online.
