Playrooms: Emphasis on Fun and Function

by Pam O'Hallaron

For the ultimate wall décor, create a gallery to display your little one's artwork and special treasures. Cover a section of a wall with corkboard and frame it with molding to create the perfect decorative art exhibit.

Furnishings for Fun

Furnishings for the playroom need to be flexible, durable, and stand up to children's physical activities. Hand-painted, distressed furniture is a wonderful choice. The normal wear and tear caused by children's energetic play adds to the worn charm of these pieces.

Your playroom furnishings should include plenty of storage, ample workspace for projects, and a comfortable place for quiet time. An armoire stores a television, VCR or DVD, and video games. Shelving units and bookcases hold books, games, and stuffed animals.

Older children appreciate their very own desks with storage space for art supplies. Younger tots enjoy tea parties and coloring books at a table and a chair set that's just their size. You may also want to consider an easel, soft upholstered chairs, and a toy box.

Safety and Style Tips

Secure tall shelving by bolting it to the wall or using a furniture harness to prevent toppling. Keep favorite (and safe!) games and toys within your child's reach by placing them on low shelves. Look for open toy boxes or designs that close with safety hinges to protect little fingers. And be sure to babyproof your playroom if younger siblings will be sharing the space.

Want to control clutter? Fabric panels added to shelving units and bookcases can hide messy shelves, add texture, and soften edges. Use tab-top curtains with rods and fun finials (without pointed edges) or fabric with Velcro strips.

The playroom is a place for fun, so have a great time decorating it. Work with your little one to pick colors, fabrics, and furnishings. Remember these three basics:

  1. Sensible wall and floor coverings
  2. Versatile furnishings
  3. Fun colors
These tips will help you create a playroom your entire family will enjoy.
