Decorating your baby's nursery is one of the most exciting and challenging things to do when you're expecting. Paint samples, bedding, drawer pulls, window treatments, stuffed animals… So many options, so little time, but oh, so much fun! So we say, get creative and get started because Baby will be here before you know it. Let the nesting begin!
Color Me Baby
As any decorator will tell you, color is crucial. And when it comes to the nursery, the rules don't change. So whether it's bubblegum pink or mellow yellow, you can't go wrong. That said, if you're afraid to turn your room in to a purple palace, consider creating an accent wall to bring color into the room, or even a mural. If the idea of too much color makes you cringe however, keep in mind that neutral no longer translates to boring. In fact, neutrals can create a soothing backdrop to baby bedding and furniture. Whether color is the first decision you make, or the last, have fun with it! Remember, a coat of pain is always easy to change.
Frame It
We love the idea of finding art in the most unexpected places. That adorable outfit that you're planning to have Baby wear home from the hospital could be the masterpiece you're looking for. Picture this: Baby's home and the outfit is now in a drawer. So why not consider buying a shadow box frame and mounting that wonderful bodysuit inside it? You'll find that this not only makes a great piece of wall art, but also a conversation piece of sentimental value. And don't stop at clothing. Birth announcements, blankies, and hand/footprints are all wall-worthy!
Themes
You can't talk about decorating a nursery without talking about themes. Instead of letting the idea of choosing a theme make you nervous, use it as a basis to make all of your choices—from room color, bedding, rugs, mobiles, and even furniture—the theme will actually make all of those decisions easier. Whether you're considering Beatrix Potter or Harry Potter, having a theme will give you the direction you need to create a special space for Baby.
Accent Pieces
If decorating a nursery is not in your comfort zone, we always suggest keeping it simple. Don't feel you need to over-decorate and fill every square inch of space with baby "stuff." We've found that one fabulous rug, a unique chair, or an adorable pillow can be just what your nursery needs to give it the sensational oomph you're looking for. Also keep in mind that creating a nursery is a process. One amazing accent piece might just lead you in the right direction.
Do It Yourself
For all you DIYers out there, there's nothing like a baby's room to get your creative juices flowing. While bedding, rugs, and furniture may get top billing, stencils can supply just the whimsy you want to complete the whole look. They can be as simple as an outline of a single flower, or you can go wild and create an entire flower garden, complete with ladybugs and lilies. If car designs get your engines going, go for it! The possibilities are endless, so go ahead and let your inner artist out!
