Ellie & Melissa, The Baby Planners Love... Baby on a Budget
Here are some of our favorite budget-friendly picks for Baby that won't put a major dent in your wallet.
Bright Starts Bouncer
Any new parent will tell you what they really need is an extra set of hands, someone or something to hold Baby while they take a minute to unwind. That is why we’ve dubbed the bouncer, mommy’s first shower, a place to safely put Baby while you refresh and rejuvenate. Many Bright Starts Bouncers, such as the Bright Starts Cotton Tale Bouncer, come in at a great price point—$30—making them a must-have for any budget conscious shopper. We love that the low price doesn’t mean you’re getting less. In fact, the bouncers all come with a comfy padded/vibrating seat, safety harness, dangling and detachable toys, and best of all, adorable designs!
While we realize that nursing is not always easy and for some not always possible, we say that if you can (and want) to do it, then go for it! It’s good for Baby, good for you, and great for your budget. You won’t have to worry about buying a bunch of bottles and expensive formula, and you’ll have the piece of mind that your baby is off to a healthy start. We suggest investing the money you save on “feeding” items and purchase a few basics such as breast pads and easy access nursing bras. Who knows you may even have enough left over to splurge on a cute nursing cover—ka-ching!
Travel System Stroller
A stroller is definitely one of those big-ticket items that strikes fear in many new parents. There are a lot of options out there from functionality to style, and staying within a budget can be difficult. That’s why we think the travel system is the best way to stretch your stroller budget. We love that you can use them with a compatible infant car seat—and then once you take out the car seat, it becomes an infant stroller. You can keep pushing it all the way through toddlerdom. Yes, by then it may have seen better days but it’ll still get you and Baby where you need to go. And really—isn’t that what it’s all about?!
One of our favorite ways to shop for Baby is through exchange. Say what? Well, it’s because when it comes to Baby, items are only used for such a limited time, that “gently used” really does mean, gently used! We’re big fans of ThredUp.com and SwapMamas.com whose motto is “No selling. No buying. Just loads of good karma.” On both sites you’ll be shopping and swapping with like-minded parents where you can browse other people’s things and list your own. We’re also impressed with BabyGoodBuys.com where you can find “bargains and advice to save big on baby.” Sounds good to us!
The Ultimate Crib Sheet
On virtually every single one of our client registries, you’ll find the Ultimate Crib Sheet by Summer Infant. To us, it’s a must for newborns that will save you time, patience, and money—yes, all three! This four-in-one crib sheet topper is all you need to keep your sheets and crib mattress clean and dry. Instead of needing a separate sheet, waterproof pad, and mattress pad, simply lay the Ultimate Crib Sheet on top of your existing crib sheet, attach it to the bars, and voila, you have a comfortable sheet that offers wetness protection in three layers: a sheet on top, soft padding in the middle, and vinyl next to the mattress. Fabulous!
Lullaby Birth Announcements
While electronic birth announcements may not be traditional, there’s no denying that they’re affordable and yes, even good for the environment (no paper waste, no carbon waste). We’re fans of Lullaby Announcements for this very reason. Announce your new baby with designer digital announcements that can be customized with your baby’s photo, name, birthday, and measurements—all the fun details you want. Choose a design, add your text, and upload a photo—it’s that simple. You can then send via email, post it on your blog, or other social media.
Yes, we love this book! Having taken our highlighted, scribbled, rat-eared copy with us on our own baby shopping excursions we can’t help but recommend it to others. This useful shopping guide provides parents-to-be with a clear, concise and truthful look at all the things they’ll need and won’t need (but may want!) when shopping for Baby. Put simply, it is comparison-shopping made manageable. It is laid out in sections including nursery necessities, on-the-go gear, maternity and nursing items, and more. We warn you, it can be overwhelming, so take it slow!
