Q&A: Does alcohol consumption affect sperm count?

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

I have seen a range of opinions about alcohol and sperm. Some articles say that excessive drinking should be avoided, but fail to define "excessive." Others say that all drinking should be avoided. One article I found suggests that "two drinks a day constitutes heavy drinking that can have adverse effects on birthweight." This is all very vague and confusing. Does alcohol consumption affect sperm count?

According to the Mayo Clinic alcohol can not only effect your count but also sperm quality. They suggest you "limit alcohol to no more than one or two drinks a day" for healthy sperm. If you and your partner are trying to conceive there are other steps you can take as well to make sure your fertility will be at its peak. Talk to your health care provider about other changes you might want to make to your diet.
