Q&A: Does a drop in HCG mean miscarriage?

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

I recently went through in vitro and had my embryo transfer on June 3rd (transferred two embryos). On the 15th, I tested positive with the first blood test with a HCG level of about 60. On the 17th, the second blood test showed a drop in HCG to 41. What could this mean. Is there a chance for this pregnancy to survive?

I would wait for a repeat HCG. Nothing becomes "official," especially alarming news, until you have two consecutive drops in HCG. If this were to happen, don't get discouraged--you now know you CAN GET pregnant.
