Q&A: What is the treatment for a closed vagina?

My daughter was born with her vagina closed. What are the options or procedure to correct the problem?

A closed vagina usually results from labial adhesions, a situation in which the lips forming the vagina remain partially fused.

Does your daughter urinate normally? If not, then there is more urgency to the problem and surgery should be considered. If the opening is large enough to allow the normal stream of urine to flow, then there are two options. The first is to use an estrogen cream locally, which usually opens the tissue. The second option is to do nothing. At puberty, the body's own estrogen soars and most of the time the fused labial tissue opens spontaneously.
