Q&A: Are any anti-depressants safe during pregnancy?

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

Is any particular anti-depressant (Zoloft, Lexapro, Wellbutrin, Prozak, Paxil) considered the "safer" or "less risky" for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding?

This is an important question since the Mayo Clinic reports that "an estimated 10 percent of women experience depression during pregnancy."

Prozac has the longest safety track record, so it is considered the safest. But there certainly are other medications available that are also considered relatively safe. Talk to your health care provider about which medication would work best for your circumstances.
