Q&A: Can Bulimia affect fertility?

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

My partner and I have been trying to conceive for the past four months and are having difficulties. I have been pregnant by him before and that pregnancy was terminated four years ago. I am bulimic, otherwise I am a perfectly healthy 23-year-old, but for the past three months of trying to concieve I have stopped. Could that have an affect on my not having concieved yet?

Thank goodness you stopped. There are a couple of points you need to be aware of:

  1. Bulimia is associated with serious psychiatric disoders, so you need to be evaluated by a psychiatrist, psychlologist, or social worker.
  2. Bulimia is harmful, especially to the cycling dynamics of the menstrual cycle. It may take as long as six months to a year for you to get back to normal. The fact that you've been pregnant before by this man means you'll more than likely succeed at some point.
