Q&A: Can I eat lobster or shrimp when pregnant?

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

I keep getting mixed advice on what I can eat during my pregnancy. Can I eat lobster or shrimp? If so, can I only eat it if it is cooked?

I would follow the guidelines of the CDC regarding mercury concerns, especially for tuna fish. Other risks to your baby are the same as risks you would incur with any improperly prepared, or uncooked, meats or seafood. Use the CDC guidelines which are very good at responding to these and other concerns - such as those regarding soft cheeses and potentially associated Listeria risks.
