Q&A: After my ultrasound, I am concerned that my fetus looks long and narrow.

by Marie O'Sullivan, RN

I am 6 weeks and 5 days pregnant through invitro fertilization. We have had 3 ultrasounds done over the last 3 weeks. The first 2 looked fine and normal. But todays looked funny. The fetus is long and narrow - although my Dr said it has grown to a normal length of 8.8mm. But it does not look like a normal/typical fetus. Instead of the kidney shape it looks more like a string bean. What does this mean? Could or is it a problem? Does this mean the baby is deformed? Do I need to do anything?

A picture of a 6-7 week fetus should look like a stringbean. The fetus has elongated and that seems to be the norm at this time in your pregnancy.
