2008 top picks for families
Who can resist days at pools and beaches, outdoor picnics, and long leisurely visits to the park all summer long? Unfortunately, hours of outdoor time means lots of exposure to the sun’s harmful rays.
If you’re planning on full days outside, remember to look for shade during peak hours (11:00 am to 3:00 pm) or bring a large tent or umbrella with you to protect your family. Read on for more of our summer safety must-haves for parents of babies and toddlers.

Sunscreens: Conventional
Conventional sunscreens generally use chemicals to prevent the sun's rays from damaging Baby's skin. These tend to have lovely textures, are easy to apply, and last for hours. However, for the sunscreens to work, the chemicals are absorbed into Baby's skin.
Our mom-testers' top picks:
Aveeno Baby Continuous Protection Sunscreen SPF 55: With a soft, silky application, Aveeno was a bit hit with our test moms. They liked the lack of smell, and they felt that the ingredients were somewhat more natural than other conventional brands. Excellent for sensitive skin, Aveeno didn't cause rashes or hives in kids who usually break out. One test family was especially excited about the new spray, excellent for protecting wiggly kids. Price: 5 oz spray for $9.99
Baby Blanket Faces SPF 45: Our test moms loved that this product was made specifically for Baby's face. Perfect for water or land play, our moms liked the lack of scent and that it went on smoothly. One of our test babies did break out in a rash from this sunscreen, but our other family had no issues. Price: 6 oz for $7.50
