The Coalition for Safe and Responsible ATV Use Speaks Out Against CPSIA
September 2009
At an Oversight Hearing on the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA), the Coalition for Safe and Responsible ATV Use issued a statement in conjunction with the House Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection, urging congress to reconsider the ban on youth model off-road vehicles.
The ban, which was implemented late in 2008 as part of the CPSIA's crackdown on lead limits, forced dealers and manufacturers to pull youth models from stores. The Coalition believes the result will be that children under 12 will ride larger, faster, adult models. CPSC studies show almost 90 percent of youth injuries and fatalities occur on adult-size ATVs.
Scientists from the CPSC acknowledge that the lead in these products is needed for product durability and stability and does not present any real health hazards to passengers, but the ban has not been lifted.
