Peace on Earth and Peace of Mind
Your baby loves the twinkling lights on the tree and the pretty trimmings and bows on the presents. The magic of the holidays is a delight for your little ones, but there are serious safety precautions a parent should take to avoid accidents spoiling the Christmas cheer.
Christmas Light Do's and Don'ts
- Use only 'newer' UL-approved indoor lights inside your home.
- Inspect for broken sockets and frayed wires.
- Be careful not to overload extension cords.
- Run wires along the wall using electrical tape to hold them in place.
Christmas Tree Safety
- Trim lower branches to avoid eye injury. Keep the tree in a sturdy, wide stand so it can't topple over.
- Poisonous flowers include mistletoe, holly berries, Jerusalem cherries, and amaryllises. Keep them out of reach of all children.
- Keep glass ornaments and detachable hanging decorations out of baby's reach. Ornaments often fall and detach, leaving small pieces your baby can choke on.
- Vacuum fallen needles and leaves so your baby can't put them in her mouth.
Keeping Presents Safe
- Discard all wrapping paper, ribbons, plastic bags and other packaging material after gifts have been opened. Colored paper can contain lead, and other items pose choking and suffocation hazards.
- Make sure all gifts for baby are large enough that they can't fit in his mouth, ears or nose.
