All the Trimmings: Real vs. Artificial Trees

If you celebrate Christmas, you probably already have a strong opinion of what kind of tree goes in your house—yet what type of tree to get can be a point of contention for some couples. Many families choose artificial trees because of allergies and convenience. Other families feel that they can't put up a tree that they've pulled out of a box. If you're facing this dilemma, here are some considerations for both sides.

An Artificial Tree

• Easy to assemble, and hassle-free when compared to choosing, moving, and putting up a real tree.


• No needles that can fall to the floor and cause a hazard for young children.


• No sap that can ruin ornaments, hardwood floors, or carpet.


• Artificial trees have a perfect shape but real trees may have a flat side, hole, or other natural "imperfection."


• Most artificial trees are fire resistant.


• You'll only need to invest in an artificial tree once, as opposed to paying for a new one each year.

A Real Tree

• Christmas tree farms produce oxygen for the environment and provide income for land that can't produce crops.


• Real trees are 100 percent biodegradable and can be recycled after the holidays.


• Real trees provide a natural smell that a fake tree can't.


• You may enjoy the natural look of a real tree.


• For some families, going to a tree farm to select the Christmas tree is a beloved holiday tradition.


• Real trees do not release dangerous fumes when on fire (some artificial trees do).

No matter what type of tree your family decides to purchase, be sure you have considered all the pros and cons before the sale is final.

If a family member suffers from an allergy to trees, consult an allergist who may be able to give you medication or treatment for the reaction.
