Four-Leafed Fun for Little Ones

Lucky Chip Hat

You'll need:

  • Clean and empty 1/2-gallon round ice cream container (you do not need the lid)
  • Construction paper (green, yellow, and black)
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Tape
  • Dinner plate (or any round object larger than your ice cream container to trace)

Here's what you do:

  • Trace around the large dinner plate on the green construction paper with the pen or pencil. Cut out the circle. (You may need to make sure your dinner plate fits onto the green construction paper. Any other round object would work.)
  • Use the double stick tape to adhere the cut green circle to the bottom of the 1/2-gallon ice cream container.
  • Cut a piece of green construction paper to fit around the container. This may require two pieces depending on the size of the paper. Tape the construction paper around the container.
  • Cut a 2-inch wide strip of black construction paper. It will need to be long enough to go around the ice cream container.
  • Cut a 4-inch square of the yellow construction paper.
  • Now, cut a smaller rectangle in the middle of the square. (You will not need this smaller cut out piece. You can throw it away.)
  • Now you have an ice cream container covered with green paper with a circle attached to the bottom. You have essentially the hat and the brim. Tape the 2-inch black strip to the bottom portion of the container to make the "hat band."
  • Tape the yellow square (or buckle for the hat) over the black band. It is almost as if you are making an upside down pilgrim hat!
  • You are ready to add tortilla chips into your Lucky Chip Hat. And just a hint—some stores even carry green tortilla chips during St. Patrick's Day. Look for them! You could even put cookies in your Lucky Hat!
