Your Clever Toddler in Week 89: Announcing Accomplishments

As you play hide and seek these days, your toddler isn't yet able to say, mid-game, "I know you're hiding somewhere. I looked for you behind the curtain and you weren't there, so I'll look for you in the closet—I know that you still exist somewhere." Instead, he sums up his intentions based on his understanding using the word "gone." It's a vivid example of how his intellectual skills and language ability are connected.

Over the next couple of months, listen to how he expresses himself throughout the game and as he plays with new toys and faces new challenges—stacking blocks, completing chunky puzzles, and so forth. Observing how your child responds to his successes makes it easier for you to encourage his abilities—and makes him more inclined to take healthy new risks.

And when the blocks fall over, you'll likely hear "uh-oh," which is another concept that your child will enjoy understanding.
