Your Clever Toddler in Week 102: How Your Intentions Provoke Tantrums

Of course, that doesn't make these battles of wills easy. When you do deny or delay gratification of your child's wants and a tantrum starts brewing, take a few deep breaths, shift into a low emotional gear yourself as your child shifts into high, and move toward your child while saying, "You're angry: You really want another cookie, but I won't allow it." Hold your ground, staying near your child until the tantrum subsides. Regardless of your child's age, these steps will provide emotional protection for his feelings while emphasizing your unwillingness to budge on the issue.
