10 Golden Rules of Positive Parenting

Print

Positive parenting encompasses everything from being patient to setting limits. Find out how you can learn to be a more positive mom or dad.

Our parenting styles not only shape our children's development, behaviors, perceptions, and relationships with others, but they also serve as models for the kind of people—and parents—our kids are likely to be later in life, explains Dr. Debbie Glasser, PhD, former chairperson of the National Parenting Education Network. Want positive children? Be a positive parent!

"Being a positive parent means nurturing your child's growth and development in the context of a supportive, respectful relationship," says Dr. Glasser. Positive parents do this, she explains, by setting appropriate limits, practicing patience, understanding child development, seeing the humor in life, and encouraging and supporting their children.

What if you didn't grow up with positive parenting? "The first step is to reflect on your goals, values and strategies," says Dr. Glasser. "Ask yourself what you'd like to change and how. Even small changes in the ways you interact, relate, and respond to your children can make a meaningful difference."

Are you ready to employ positive parenting techniques in your family's life? Dr. Glasser's 10 rules for positive parenting can help get you started.

1. Understand your child's behavior

When you empathize with why your child is behaving as he is, you'll be better able to respond appropriately and effectively. Dr. Glasser suggests stocking up on child development books and enrolling in a parenting class.

2. Be proactive.

Find opportunities to prevent misbehavior. For example, if your toddler typically has a tantrum when he's overtired or hungry, be sure to provide rest time and healthy snacks. Avoiding situations that trigger misbehavior is half the battle.
