Stop That Whining!

Tired of your child's whining? This annoying habit is hard for kids to break and feels like nails on a chalkboard for parents everywhere. Use these easy tips to make your home a whine-free zone!

Is your child constantly whining? Every time she calls "Mooommy!" do you wish you could change your name or run and hide under the nearest bed? Whining is a common childhood problem faced by nearly every parent at some time. Because a whining child sounds worse than a frenzied siren alarm, we tend to do anything to make it stop. Thus our little whiners discover a great way to get our undivided attention.

If you're at your wits' end trying to stop this annoying behavior, be brave! We have tried-and-true advice that is sure to work. Try these tips to help eliminate the whining.

Don't Give In

Never, ever respond to or give in to a whining request. Instead announce, "When you use your normal voice, I will listen to you." Then turn your back to the whining child and make it obvious you are ignoring her by singing or reading a book out loud held in front of your face. If the child continues to whine, repeat the same sequence without engaging the child any further. (Pleading or discussing will only increase the whining.)

Set an Example

Help your child by modeling what it is you want to hear: "I can't understand you when you use a whining voice, please say, 'Mommy, may I please have a drink.'"
