Everyone knows about the San Diego and Bronx Zoos, but what about the rest of North America? Your BabyZone regional guides have kid-tested zoos across the continent and present some of their favorites in these pages. Zoos have made the jump into the new millennium with improvements for people and animals alike, and many now feature play places, children's zoos, educational and music programs, and even train rides. Plus there's been a major change in philosophy over the last twenty years, resulting in more humane conditions for animals and better educational opportunities for visitors. Most animals are now housed in large habitats that closely resemble their native homes, complete with plant cover, favorite foods, and other species. You can still get up-close and personal, though–in some cases, only a plate of Plexiglas may separate you and an adult gorilla or lion!

Chicago, IL
Lincoln Park Zoo, In the heart of downtown Chicago, offers over fifteen exhibits, including its latest addition, the Regenstein African Journey. Brookfield Zoo, Chicago's largest, is home to 2,700 animals on a 215-acre site. This award-winning zoo has over twenty exhibits, including the Hamill Family Play Zoo where children and their families can interact with animals and plants. more
Birmingham, AL
Kids will love the Lorikeet Walk-Through Aviary, where they can hand-feed colorful birds, which may land on a hand or shoulder! Other favorites are the children's zoo, with an aquarium featuring fish and turtles of Alabama, a play area, a water sprinkler area (so bring your swimsuits), a carousel filled with exotic animals, and a barn with favorite farm animals. more
Philadelphia, PA
Philadelphia Zoo is "America's First Zoo" and one of Philadelphia's premier attractions. With sixteen animal exhibits and nine attractions, the Zoo educates its visitors about different animal habitats and zoo-sponsored conservation projects around the world. Long Island, NY
The Long Island Game Farm is ideal for the preschool/elementary age set. There are rides (merry-go-round, tea cups, train) for the kids, changing stations in the bathrooms, a concession stand, and souvenirs. Plus there are plenty of places to have a quick rest or enjoy your lunch. more
